Sidney House is a project shaped as much by preservation as it is by renewal.

What began as a modest retirement home became something more meaningful when the client chose to continue the project following the passing of her husband. The resulting architecture honours that shared vision while responding carefully to the realities of ageing in place.

The brief prioritised simplicity, durability and passive environmental performance. Two bedrooms, a library and a strong connection to the garden were accommodated within a design that avoids reliance on mechanical cooling and embraces the site's elevated northerly aspect.

Rather than demolishing the existing cottage, the project retained and reworked what was already there. New interventions are expressed honestly through raw blockwork, concrete and galvanised steel, creating a deliberate contrast to the warmth and familiarity of the original brick structure.

The landscape plays an equally important role. Collected tools and materials belonging to the client's late husband were incorporated into gabion walls throughout the garden, embedding memory and personal history within the fabric of the project.

The result is a home that demonstrates the value of thoughtful adaptation — preserving not only a building, but the stories attached to it.
