Kent
Located on a compact site in Teneriffe, Kent balances the retention of an existing workers cottage with a contemporary extension designed around privacy, landscape and light.
The clients were committed to preserving the character of the original home, while creating a retreat that felt removed from the density of its inner-city surroundings. Achieving this required careful management of overlooking from neighbouring buildings without compromising openness or connection to the outdoors.
Formed concrete planter walls establish privacy around the pool and entertaining areas, screening adjacent sightlines while creating a framework for lush tropical planting. Over time, the landscape softens the architecture, producing a garden setting that feels immersive and secluded.
A skylit spine running through the centre of the home introduces daylight deep into the plan, improving spatial quality and creating visual continuity between old and new. Custom joinery is integrated throughout, maximising storage while maintaining a sense of clarity and restraint.
The lower level steps with the natural fall of the site, reducing the apparent scale of the addition and allowing the landscape to play a more prominent role. Together, architecture and planting create a calm, private environment that feels far removed from the city beyond.
